In line with the European Green Deal and the EU’s commitment to climate neutrality by 2050, the new Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) – Regulation (EU) 2025/40 – enters into full application on 12 August 2026. This landmark legislation mandates that all packaging be recyclable by design, sets ambitious reuse targets (at least 10% reusable beverage packaging by 2030, rising to 40% by 2040), and enforces minimum recycled content requirements. It builds directly on the Single-Use Plastics Directive (SUPD), which has already required tethered caps on all single-use plastic beverage containers up to 3 litres since July 2024 to prevent litter and boost recycling rates.
