Satkhira-4 Member of Parliament Gazi Nazrul Islam of Jamaat has become embroiled in controversy after videos showing him in an intimate moment with a teenage girl went viral on social media. The incident has sparked widespread public outrage, particularly in his constituency.
According to reports, CCTV footage allegedly captured the MP with the woman in a room, reportedly in Dhaka. Multiple clips circulated, showing him in close proximity with her on a bed. In one video, local youths confronted him after the incident. The MP was reportedly seen pleading with them, asking for forgiveness and requesting that the clips be deleted. The woman is reported to be teenage and had reportedly been seeking a job. The MP had signed her bio-data and provided a strong recommendation using his parliamentary position shortly before or around the time of the incident. This is clear idications that he misused his influence as an Member of Parliament.
Initial Reactions and Shifting Explanations
When the videos first surfaced, Jamaat officially claimed they were AI-generated. However, fact-checking organizations, including Rumour Scanner, examined the footage and found no evidence of manipulation, concluding that the videos appear authentic. Later Gazi Nazrul Islam posted on Facebook stating that the young woman, Mariam Begum (also referred to as Mariam Khatun), is his second wife. He claimed they were married on 17 June in a family ceremony at her father’s residence in Dhaka, with the consent of his first wife.
This claim has faced significant scrutiny. The marriage registrar (kazi) whose name appears on the certificate reportedly stated that he was not present at any ceremony and only prepared the paperwork later, after the video went viral. Reports also indicate inconsistencies, such as the woman being listed as unmarried in her bio-data even after the alleged marriage date, and the timing of the job recommendation.
Driver’s Role and Public Exposure
Reports suggest that the MP’s private car driver played a key role in exposing the incident. Allegedly unable to tolerate the situation—particularly as he has a sister of similar age—the driver reportedly assisted local youths in confronting the MP and making the footage public. The videos quickly went viral, leading to national outrage. As a result he was attacked my MP’s loyals and currently at hidding.
Jamaat’s 2nd Response
Jamaat-e-Islami initially distanced itself from the videos but later conducted an internal investigation. On 22 July 2026, the party expelled Gazi Nazrul Islam for “moral lapse” following an emergency meeting of its central executive committee. The party announced it would inform the Election Commission of the decision.
